Course Notes

Most importantly, this is a point to point race. YOU MUST HAVE YOUR OWN SUPPORT.

You cannot leave your kayak and go back and get it after the race and your support must set up your bike at the mountain.  The finish line is 15 miles away from the start, so make sure your support knows how to get there.

Stick around on the summit for food afterwards and if you did not pay for your extra support to eat (you each get one support person covered with the race fee), make sure you do this at registration.  Please stick around after you finish as your entry gives you and your support a lunch on top of the mountain. You may pay for extra people for the lunch, but this needs to be done in advance of the race day.

1. Please pre-register at 5:00 PM at the Eliot Boat Basin (race start location) the night before the race June 13th.  Pre-registration stops at 6:00PM.
2. Race day registration starts at 6:00 AM and finishes at 7:15 AM.  We will start at 8:00 AM sharp so be there on time.
3. The kayak start is on the beach next to the dock.
4. There are no racing kayaks allowed and there are no double kayaks or double bikes for that matter. Basically, you will know if your boat is a racing boat.  Look at the kayak description on our site for the  20/20 rule.
5. Skirts are not required in the kayak.
6. There will be two waves starts.  First is male and second (at 8:05) is female and  team.  Everyone will be in the water when the cowbell goes off.  No running and getting in your  boats.  This will be a mellow, non threatening start so don't worry.
7. There will be two large orange buoys and a triangular race course pattern will be followed.  Just follow the line of boats in front of you.
8.  On the ride, do not have your support drive slow behind you.  You will be disqualified if this happens as it is very dangerous.  You should have enough food and water on your person for a 25 mile bike ride.  Do not pick up supplies on the course from your support person; it will interfere with the race progress.  No drafting on the bike.
9. The ride is well marked with yellow paint, bright signs, with volunteers and police at the dangerous intersections.  No one has gotten lost on the course in the first two years.
10. The course is not closed and there will be cars on the roads, in some places traveling very fast so ride with caution.
11. The run course is mostly downhill for the first mile on a dirt road, flat on a dirt path for the next 3/4 mile then UP HILL BABY the last mile.
12. Stick around on the summit for food afterwards and if you did not pay for your support to eat, make sure you do this at registration.
Please stick around after you finish as your entry gives you and your support a lunch on top of the mountain. You may pay for extra people for the lunch, but this needs to be done in advance of the race day.

13. We have the race RAIN OR SHINE.  The only thing which will cancel it are severe winds where the water is too choppy and deemed to be too dangerous and or lightning.  If this happens there are no refunds.  The race director does have the right to turn the race into a duathlon (replacing the kayak with a 2-3 mile run) if the water is deemed too dangerous.
14. The award categories are 18-29 male and female, 30-39 male and female, over 40 male and female.  All of these are for 1st -3rd place.  Also there are awards for the top three teams.  The top three males and top three females will get pretty cool awards.
15. There is a 3:30 minute time limit on the race, awards will be held at 11:30 and official timing ends at this time also.
16.
BE SAFE - Personal floatation devices (life vests) are required on the kayak as well as bike helmets during the ride.

17.  The age limit for the race is 18 and over unless someone under 18 has racing experience and their parents can prove to the race director the underage participant will not be a danger to themselves or other athletes.  They also should be able to finish each leg of the race in a reasonable amount of time.  Please contact the race director prior to submission of an underage applicant.

Race Rules

It should be noted this is a point to point race and the athletes must have help transporting their kayaks to and from the water entrance.  Volunteers will be there to help but should not be relied upon as a primary means of kayak transport.

Kayak

No racing kayaks are allowed.  The boat should be a sea kayak 20 feet or shorter in length with a width no slimmer than 20 inches at the seat.  No winged paddles are allowed. Kayakers should be experienced but do not need to be expert paddlers as the section of the Piscataqua River in which we are racing is off to the side of the main current.  We anticipate a two knot current behind the racers for the first mile then a two knot current in their faces upon returning back to the dock.

Bike

The bike course will be well marked with signs and cones.  Drafting is not allowed. Riders must be wearing a helmet.

Run

The 3-mile run course is a mix of paved roads and trails with roots, rocks, and sometimes a little bit of mud.  There will be race officials at all trail intersections and will finish at the summit.  The course will leave the base parking lot and head towards the dirt section of Mt. Road.  In one mile it will leave the road and traverse these trails.  Cedar to Goosefoot to Ring to Hairpin to the paved summit road for the last 200 meters.

Triathlon Awards

There will be awards given to the top three males, females
and teams in each of the categories listed below:

Ages:

18 - 29
  30 - 39
  40 - 49
